CANADIAN HEROES - Bag O' Milk

It didn't take Johnada too long to find the freakiest part of the Ontario experience - bagged milk. Instead of coming in plastic jugs, a gallon (or 4 litres) of milk comes in bags. I think milk is bagged to produce less waste, but I couldn't find the official reasoning on the internet. And Johnada refuses to wast time on research.

Johnada is not a big milk drinker because he thinks it's weird to drink another animal's baby food. (But he loves cheese, so he's really just a giant hypocrite.) However, the Wife drinks a lot of milk to prevent osteoporosis, so we eventually had to confront bags of milk firsthand. Plus, what's the point of moving to Ontario if you aren't going to buy bagged milk?

Admittedly, Johnada is not breaking new ground with a hard-hitting blog story on milk in a bag. In fact, there is a website devoted entirely to bagged milk. If you go to the site, note those prices are not accurate. Milk is way more expensive these days, especially the organic kind that we buy. In addition, YouTube has several instructional videos devoted exclusively to the subject:

There's also a longer bagged milk instructional video here. It needs to be edited and the guy's kind of dorky, but it's surprisingly fascinating.

We really should have watched these videos before we bought our milk jug. In Johnada, we just bought a regular pitcher, and we pour the entire bag of milk in, which is a big no no. Though it's not popular here, it's a good way for us foreigners to ease our way in. The pitcher has swans on it, so we should get points for that.

Bagged milk gets 4.5 Hortons. Environmental friendliness is always a winner on this blog, plus it's surprisingly fun to toss a milk bag in the air. But I've got to end this post, because the more I think about milk, the less I want to drink it. And I don't want my fear of milk to spread to cheese, because cheese is good.

On the 'bagged milk' link, do you think the person who set up the website made up all the questions under the FAQ link? There are some pretty good questions....

In France, we get cartons of milk...

This lead to a weird situation one day. I was teaching a class of beginners in French and we had to do this exercise, where you had to link the product to its packaging.

Like:

Juice ==== Bottle

Except you don't shop the same way in Europe that you do in North America, so I couldn't figure out what was going with what... in French!

Like are we supposed to say "un sac plastique" for milk? "un sac? And what about pack? What's the French for pack? Paquet? Like cigarette? But it doesn't work for beer...

Language IS cultural. :D

Johnada,
The sack has proven popular with generations of young boys and teenagers in Ontario who nervously take comfort in snatching the bag from the fridge and nursing it directly. It makes us all warm and fuzzy inside in a confusing way.

My middle school briefly dabbled in bagged milk, and I found that it had a mild plastic-y taste to it. It was a blast jabbing the straw into the bag, though.

How is the product is displayed for purchase in the grocery store? How do they organize bags of milk? I would think they would fall all over on eachother and look a mess. Is it in a bin? Hagging like the shredded cheese? Ok, now I have a visual of a wall of hagging milk bags. Perhaps Johnada could perform some recon and provide a visual?

SMB - I agree the milk dude does have killer hair. He must use good shampoo.

Z - Language is very cultural. I'm having enough problems with Canadian English vs. American English. I'm certain I would say some very strange things if I lived somewhere without my native tongue. In fact, I already do it too much now.

Beaverboosh - Yet another example of what those long Canadian winters will do to a person.

Meg - That sounds like Capri Sun to me. Did you ever create the milk backflow by blowing into the bag?

Amers -As for purchasing the bag, it's in the milk section, and I probably wasn't clear enough, but it comes in a giant bag with three smaller bags inside. The giant bags are in the same place gallon jugs would be. They are very odd to look at, just plopped there.

You are hilarious! Great job showing how to use the bagged milk. I am thinking of immigrating to Canada so I am reading your website very closely!
