CURLING WEEK - Is Curling Exercise?

After yesterday's diversion, we are back to our regularly scheduled curling week coverage. Today we ask the question is curling exercise?

A good friend of mine from MN, we'll call him Chanakya, responded with vitriol to my mentioning that curling may not be the best exercise. To prove his point, he sent me two videos that show the sweat-inducing power of curling.

In the following video, keep yours eyes out for the strenuous workout the guy in green gets. Also, take a look at the silvery things that come in focus near the end. I'm guessing they are full of Gatorade.

Wow, I'm thinking Chan burned at least 1-2 calories there. If he does that same thing about 450 more times, he'd have a good workout.

But lest you think curling is a one-dimensional. Check out this video where Chan works out his front and rear sliding-along-on-ice leg muscles:

Wow, it looks like the people with brooms actually do something. It's too band Chan doesn't have any proof that he does that.

According to this website, curling has a .066 coefficient of calories burnt per minute per kg of body weight. This about the same as walking briskly, golf, table tennis or coaching. It's more calories than water volleyball and surfing, but less than fishing in a stream, cricket and badminton.

So is curling exercise? I'd say yes, but I'm guessing there is a net loss if you include the amount of beer drinking that goes on afterwards. Your thoughts?

Tune in tomorrow for our annual Tournament of Hearts preview, always one of the most popular features on this blog. And totally unrelated, here's a curling video from South Africa:

I just got back from a bonspiel (a curling tournament). I don't remember the last time my arms and body were so soar. It hurts to cough! After three curling matches my team opted to forgo the drinking and sleep! Either I am too damn old or curling is exercise. My vote ---- CURLING is EXERCISE!!!!!!!

I love to practice exercise, i think this activity is the best option to keep our total welfare and it is very fun. When we exercise frequently we can notice a change not only in our shape but in our mood too. Actually we can improve our sexual performance. When some cases when the erectil dysfunction present like a problem to buy viagra is a great alternative, how ever you must to combine it with exercises and a good food.
